Obesity rates are rising ever higher, particularly among children. You don’t have to make drastic changes all at once. But if you don’t do anything today, there is a good chance that your overweight kids will continue to become overweight adults. Vincent Iannelli, M.D., (Pediatrics) offers these five quick and easy weight loss steps that can help you & your child live healthier.

Losing weight is a long term goal for most people. The time it takes for you to get to your goal weight depends on how many pounds you need to lose. For example, if you need to lose five pounds, you can do that in a maximum of two weeks. Losing 50 pounds may take the best part of a year.Although a year may seem a long time, it’s vital that you take the time, and lose weight slowly. If you lose too fast, your body doesn’t have time to adjust, and neither does your lifestyle.

Type of exercise. If you’re already a runner or a cyclist or something similar, then begin a very, very modest program of resuming that exercise. Otherwise, walking, a treadmill, hiking, a cycling machine, rowing, or something similar would work. Mixing it up is a great idea, alternating different exercises on different days. The actual exercise you do doesn’t matter, as long as you get moving.

Take a 30-Day Break from all Sodas

If you want to drop 10 pounds in 30 days, then soda needs to go. That includes diet soda. Recent studies have shown that diet sodas don’t help with weight loss. In fact, diet soda may be counter-effective. Take a 30-day break from all soda intake. At the end of 30 days, consider a long-term lifestyle change — maybe 1 small soda a day. Of course, you may find that after going without soda for 30 full days, you don’t crave it as much anymore. In that case, drop it altogether.

When you put together a weight loss meal plan, there are several things that you need to keep in mind. First, remember to keep simple carbohydrates low when it comes to your diet. If a food contains a lot of sugar and white flour, avoid it or try not to have it at all. Instead, if you have a sweet tooth, replace it with natural sugars found in fruit. Cheese, although it is high in calories, can also help you keep your carbohydrate count down. When eaten in moderation, like all food should be, you’ll find that natural sugars are help to satify that sweet tooth while actually being good for you.
